Standing by the Thames

Commissioned by Tideway, the company behind London’s 'super sewer', Matthew’s latest project explores seven newly developed public spaces along The River Thames. Pairing intimate portraits with expansive panoramas of the new spaces, these striking images celebrate the people behind one of the city’s most significant civil engineering and urban infrastructure projects in recent decades. Aiming to capture the collective face of a mammoth 10-year project, Matt’s work was shaped by patience, timing, and the pursuit of the perfect light. Celebrating the finished project with a photo essay and public exhibition, 'Standing by the Thames' was recently exhibited in an stunning open-air event at Bazalgette Embankment, Blackfriars Bridge, and will go on display again at the end of the summer.

"Thanks to my seven subjects who were gracious and patient with their time - and put up with a lot of standing still in cold weather, early starts and late evenings. This project was never going to move quickly, but taking time over something like this just makes it sweeter when it all comes together." - Matt Joseph.
